What Type of Blonde Should I Ask for at My Color Service?

Going blonde isn’t a one-size-fits-all process. Whether you’re looking for a bold, high-impact transformation or a low-maintenance, sun-kissed glow, knowing what to ask for at your color appointment can make all the difference. At Trinity Salon | Newberg Hair Salon, our blonding specialist specialize in customizing blonde shades that suit your style, maintenance preferences, and natural hair color. Let’s break down the different types of blonde so you can walk into your appointment feeling confident and excited about your new look!

1. Heavy Blonde – The Brightest, Boldest Look

If you love the look of all-over brightness with minimal depth, a heavy blonde might be for you. This technique involves high-density foiling or a global blonding process to achieve a platinum or ultra-light blonde effect.

Best for: Clients who want to be as light as possible with minimal dimension.

Maintenance: Expect to schedule touch-ups every 4-6 weeks to keep your roots fresh and your blonde looking seamless. At your first blonding appointment we will put together a color program for your needs and walk through next steps. We don't feel its necessary to do full highlights every appointment and walk you through your options based on the time you are looking to come between appointments. Its not recommended to do a high maintenance service like this if your looking to come in every 6 months.

Examples: Platinum blonde, full foil highlights, all-over baby blonde.

Booking: If your booking your first appointment at Trinity Salon Newberg with our blonding specialist we recommend booking a full highlight for your first appointment or text us at 503.208.4172 and we can discuss your look. This process can take a few hours and sometimes needs additional time blocked out.

2. Rooty Blonde – Dimensional & Low-Maintenance

Rooty blondes embrace depth at the root while keeping the ends bright and luminous. This style mimics natural hair growth and allows for longer times between salon visits. The transition between your natural color and the blonde is blended beautifully for a seamless, grown-out effect.

Best for: Clients who want a softer, more natural-looking blonde with less frequent salon maintenance.

Maintenance: Can go 8-12 weeks between touch-ups, depending on the level of root shadowing.

Examples: Balayage, shadow root blondes, soft ombré.

Booking: This can be done with a partial or full highlight by our blonding specialist. This can typically require the time for two toners to process. We recommend booking a full highlight for your first appointment to give us the time to start the process of getting the look. At the appointment we will get you on a hair color program to show your touch up and maintenance options. Its different for everyone but some we recommend this order for services {full highlight, Root Retouch/melt, Micro highlight, Partial highlight w/ lowlights, Root Retouch, full highlight) This is not a typical service that requires a full highlight at every appointment.

3. Lived-In Blonde – Effortless & Timeless

Lived-in blonde is all about soft, blended dimension that grows out beautifully over time. This approach combines balayage, teasy lights, and strategic lowlights to create a natural, sun-kissed effect.

Best for: Clients who want a modern, effortlessly chic look that requires minimal upkeep.

Maintenance: Refresh every 3-6 months, with glossing appointments in between to maintain tone and shine.

Examples: Sunkissed blonde, creamy beige blonde, dimensional balayage.

How to Choose the Right Blonde for You

When deciding on the perfect blonde, consider the following:

  • Our Blonding Specialist will walk you through options at your appointment.

  • Your Natural Hair Color: Darker natural hair may require multiple sessions to reach lighter blonde shades.

  • Your Desired Maintenance Level: If you prefer fewer salon visits, a rooty or lived-in blonde is ideal.

  • Your Skin Tone: Warmer blondes complement golden or olive skin, while cool-toned blondes work beautifully on fair or pink-toned complexions. Your Trinity Salon | Blonding Specialist will walk you through your options to create a custom formula. Toning is the key to create the right look for your skin. Toning is where the creativity lies with blonding that can be changed every appointment.

  • Toners: The most important part of your service is getting the right lift with the blonde. Once we have that toners play a major part in giving you the correct tones and neutralizing unwanted colors.

    • Our current favorite is doing two toners at the service. One that evens out the hair and gives a ash background then doing a second toner that is one shade darker with warmer tones. The second toner is more translucent but gives the hair amazing dimension that makes everyone stand out in a crowd.
